I had believed this was a photo of Daniel Almquist but based on the sleuthing I did on this picture<\/a>\u00a0I think this boy is actually Clarence (Swede) and uncle Steve has confirmed it! The boys in the two photos look to be about the same age, but not the same boy:<\/p>\n

The next oldest picture I have of Clarence is in his teens:<\/p>\n

He looks pretty similar to the boy on the left, yes?<\/p>\n

For now I’m going with a revised attribution of 1928-1931 for this picture, as the boy looks anywhere from 6-9. \u00a0That would be about the beginning of the Great Depression. \u00a0I never heard Clarence talk about that time being particularly difficult for his family. \u00a0From what I’ve read, the Riverside citrus industry may have escaped the brunt of it as detailed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Also in the picture is Augustav\/Gus to the left. \u00a0If this is 1928-1931 then Gus would be around 49-52. I wonder why they took the photo? \u00a0And why is Clarence without shoes?<\/p>\n

There is irrigation pipe curing on the wagon\/trailer and nice big barn in the background. Gus worked on irrigation projects in Riverside and San Bernardino county for 20 years or so.<\/p>\n

In 1910 Gustav Almquist is listed as working at a grain mill on the US census. \u00a0By 1930 he is listed as a Contractor, cement pipe. \u00a0I can’t find the Almquist family on the 1920 census, apparently they were hiding under the table that day.<\/p>\n

In my next post I’ll show you a picture of some of those irrigation pipes put to creative use, and I will prove they were used at their Perris house by 1919.<\/p>\n
