She is pictured\u00a0in the foreground of the three pictures of this post. Unfortunately she is a little blurry in all of them except the Ballard Locks picture. The pictures are not dated, and only one has a label of &#8220;This was taken on the Locks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This outing was probably around the time she was living in Seattle, 1916-1920.\u00a0The first ship through the Ballard Locks was in August 1916, but they didn&#8217;t officially open until 1917. That would make her around 21-24 in these pictures.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry behind her is part of the the fleet that services Whatcom county, the northernmost coastal county in Washington state. I&#8217;m guessing the trip was from Seattle to a port in Whatcom and back.<\/p>\n<p>Below you can see her standing on one of the Ballard Locks, quite precariously in front of the rails! Be sure to click and zoom on this one, you can actually see her quite well in this photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Embru-Trumbower-Bolanger-in-Washington-Locks.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Embru Trumbower Bolanger in Washington Locks\" src=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Embru-Trumbower-Bolanger-in-Washington-Locks-468x274.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a view today of what I&#8217;m pretty sure is the same spot:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ballard_locks_repairs.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"ballard_locks_repairs\" src=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/ballard_locks_repairs-468x308.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Photo courtesy of<a href=\"http:\/\/robcizek.com\/tag\/best\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Rob Cizek.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a little research I found out that hand-held cameras were available starting in 1900, so it wouldn&#8217;t have been too unusual for someone to take one on a trip like this. \u00a0Below she again seems to be out on the edge of something, Celia must have liked to live dangerously! Grandma Dean says she remembers the hat in these pictures, and was not surprised to see her mom climbing out on ledges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Embru-Trumbower-Bolanger-in-Washington-on-canoe.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Embru Trumbower Bolanger in Washington on canoe\" src=\"http:\/\/blackenedroots.com\/natasha\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Embru-Trumbower-Bolanger-in-Washington-on-canoe-468x287.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Who is behind the camera? \u00a0It could be Warren Francis (1888-1972), her first husband and the father of Bess and Embru (known as Francis). They divorced around 1919. \u00a0It could be Clark Olsen, who she married in 1921, her second husband and father of Nadine and Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Clark was the brother of the man, David Martin &#8220;Mike&#8221; Olsen, who married Celia&#8217;s sister Bessie.
