This is an image of Clarence and his mother Hannah Alfrieda (Munter) Almquist, probably taken around 1940. The picture was most likely taken at a photo-booth at one of Alfreida, Gus, and Dan Almquist’s skating rinks in Riverside. Clarence looks to be about 17-21 here, making Alfrieda around 54-58. Photo-booths started around 1880 and were quite popular and widespread by the 1940’s. I’ll post later on the history of Almquists and rollerskating, I’ve got some great pictures and news articles to share about the rinks. The first rink opened in March of 1940 and the second in 1944.
I’m sorry for the infrequent posts, we are in the midst of some house remodeling and will be at it for awhile. In the meantime I’ll be posting a picture here and there.
