Bessie and Tootsie

Bessie and Tootsie July 19 1920

On most of the pictures I post I’m going to go through the who, where, whens of them.  Sometimes the whats too, such as what cars or houses are shown.

Who: This picture is labeled on the back “Bessie and Tootsie, taken July 19, 1920 for Bessie and Mike”.  Check out the matching outfits, bows, and haircuts! Bessie, on the right, is Bessie Nell Francis. She was born in 1917 and was 3 here. On the left is Embru Estelle Francis, born in 1916, who was 4 here. Their father was Warren E. Francis and their mother was Cecile Girton, my great-grandmother.

The “Bessie and Mike” on the inscription are Bessie (Girton) Olsen and David Martin “Mike” Olson.  Uncle Mike was the brother of George Tolof Olsen, the future second husband of Cecile Girton and Bessie was Cecile’s older sister.  Yes you read right, the two Girton girls eventually both married Olsen men, although from what I hear Bessie got the better end of that deal.

Where: I’m guessing this picture was taken while Cecile was still in Seattle, Washington.  It was one year before she married George Tolof Olsen, and a little after separating from Warren E. Francis. You can see her as head of household on the January 13, 1920 Census here: full page celia francis 1920 census, she is at the last entry on the page.  She is listed as renting at 1114 Boren Ave. below is a current picture of the house there from Google maps:

When: Bessie and Tootsie’s picture was taken July 19, 1920.  That is one day before Cecile’s birthday, who was born July 20th, 1896 in La Grande, Oregon.  She liked to go by Celia, and that is what she put herself down as on this and other censuses and directories.  I don’t know Bessie and Embru’s exact birthdays, let me know if you do!
