There are several papers online that document Alfrida Munter’s (soon to be Almquist) journey from Sweden to New York. Two can be seen below:
This list of passengers of the Caronia has Alfrida and her brother John on listed. She is down as heading to New York, while he is listed as heading to Boston, Massachusetts. Both ended up living in Massachusetts for a short time, and this is where Gus and Alfrida’s first child Blanche was born in 1907. There are other folks on the same page that are coming from Tidaholm (the area of Sweden where Alfrida’s future husband Gus hails from). Ernst (coming from Tidaholm) and August Karlblom (listed as being on a round-trip from America) may been the brothers of Gustav Karlblom, who was married to Gus Almquist’s sister Augusta.
Family legend goes that Blanche may not have been Gus’s daughter. That may still be true, but she was not conceived on the boat over, as Blanche was not born until August 1907, 13 months after the voyage. The 1910 census does list Blanche as being born in Massachusetts. I don’t have a marriage date for Gus and Alfrieda, so if anyone knows that pass it on!
This paper documents the two days that Alfrida spent waiting for someone to vouch for her, she arrived on May 16 and left on May 18. You can see she enjoyed 1 (I’m sure scrumptious) meal while waiting for pastor R. Peterson to identify her.
Oh and if you’re wondering, the picture at the top of the page is how I always imagined Alfrida’s shipboard romance would look like. Oh well.
Because I have searched the internet, I think this is the best. when will you write like this again?
